Ever since Subaru started selling its vehicles in North America, the automaker has garnered a dedicated core of followers who love its unique all-wheel-drive system, wagon body style, and outdoors-centric image. One of the most popular Subaru vehicles sold in the United States is the Subaru Outback. First brought to market in 1994, the Subaru Outback has gone through many changes in its life, and now it’s one of the top sellers and best reviewed Subaru cars in our new Subaru inventory.

The “Outback” name has actually been used on two different Subaru branded vehicles. One of these is based on the mid-sized Subaru Legacy, and the other is derived from the hatchback version of the Subaru Impreza. The creators named the vehicle “Outback” after the vast, arid, desert region of Australia. This name was chosen to emphasize the ruggedness and off-road ability of the vehicle. The first Subaru Outback vehicles were based on the Subaru Legacy and added side body cladding and raising the suspension of the Legacy wagon.

In 1999, Subaru released a newer, more unique version of the Subaru Outback. This was the first model to feature a sedan variant that featured the same off-road capabilities of the wagon. 2003 saw another redesign of the Outback, and this vehicle continued to differentiate itself from the Legacy. Finally, just a couple of years ago, in 2015, the Outback and the Legacy became two separate vehicles, with the Legacy being a sedan and the Outback being just a wagon. Although the two vehicles are still related, there are fundamental differences in the body style, ground clearance, and trim.
